Eden Von Sleaze Interview: Is Porn Art?

I had the pleasure of talking to alt porn star Eden Von Sleaze. I started out looking to define porn as either smut or art. That goal was quickly thrown out because what Eden produced was some of the funniest comments on the adult industry and life as a pornstar. She was honest, endearing, charming and hilarious. Instead of rambling about her I’ll let you see what she has to say. I’m pretty sure she’s funnier than I am any way.

-Cameron Patton, Local Ghosts

LG: How long have you been involved in the adult industry?

EVS: Well I first got naked in front of a camera when I was 19, and later ended up getting naked a lot for pictures on godsgirls and then burning angel. But it wasn’t until I was 21 that I shot my first hardcore porn. The scene was for POV punx and James Deen fucked me in the ass… so that was like 4 years ago.

LG: How do you feel about the new push towards performer run business in
the Adult Industry?

EVS: I think a performer being able to make more of their own calls is always a good thing. Nobody talks about how much power an agency controls our careers. Girls can be sent on shoots and it can be some creepy asshole that is totally unprofessional. When a performer owns a company, it’s usually a women and they make sure the girls always feel safe and want to be there, doing whatever it is that they are there to shoot. It’s just less janky

LG: What do girls in porn prefer to be called actresses, pornstars, models?

EVS: There is no wrong thing; we get paid to fuck. We are totally glorified hookers, but I always     say porn girls. Anyone who takes this seriously is out of their fucking mind. We aren’t actors. The only way we prepare for a role is with a enema, I doubt Anthony Hopkins squirts water up his ass before a scene…you know

LG: Who are your biggest influences in the porn world?

EVS: Joanna Angel, hands down has really influenced me. She taught me how to be comfortable in my own skin, and has a great sense of humor, and a good heart. She’s a smart businesswomen and an awesome performer.

LG: Who are your biggest influences outside of porn?

EVS: Outside of the porn world, I wish I had something deep and profound to give credit to the person I am. The truth is, I am a pretty screwed up girl. Any large amounts of money I saved up in the past went up my nose. It’s no secret I have done my share of drugs and made a lot of mistakes. Now I am changing that, I don’t want to be the cliché cautionary tale… I’m doing well in 12 steps. So maybe this year I will be able to save up and get Jessica Rabbit tits. That’s my life goal. I am so deep. So I wanna look like Jessica Rabbit and Brigitte Bardot.

LG: Are there any particular scenes that you enjoy doing, more than others? Are there any that kind of get on your nerves?

EVS: Oh Jesus. I’m not going to name names, but it was a B/g scene, and the second scene I had shot..And the guy’s dick was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever tasted. It was like sucking on a dead fish that had been soaked in rancid milk. The scene was awful.  That was the worst. Usually the most important things are 1) Please wash up before a scene. Be clean. 2) Be nice, and professional. 3) Have a sense of humor, this isn’t fucking art, it’s porn.

I have been lucky most of the time and worked with great guys, and sweet girls. I think my favorite scene was the one I shot with Sinn Sage for the movie eat-me-out. I also liked shooting emo sluts like old fucks. I forget the guy’s name, but he was funny.

LG: Porn is far more accepted in the mainstream than it ever was in the past. However, I’m tired of the talks of pornstars in the “mainstream” I’d rather talk about new things in porn itself. Do you see any changes in the industry? Do you see a direction that you would personally like to go in?

EVS: Once you’ve done porn you can claim to be doing mainstream stuff, but who are they kidding? They will always be remembered as the girl who licked the toilet seat (yeah Sasha Gray) or the girl who did porn when she was 16 (Traci Lords) I can’t watch a movie with them and forget I’ve seen them suck dick…. or a lot more. As far as the direction I’d like to see porn go in…I would like to see it kind of go back to its roots…before VHS and harsh lighting…where a pussy isn’t on a 50 in Hi Def TV. I don’t need to see that much detail on a vagina… the plot doesn’t have to be deep, but I want to really feel like I’m watching two real people have sex

LG: Those old porns always kind of reminded me of old Italian horror films in the way there filmed, there’s something kind of dream like about them.

EVS: Emmanuelle was a dream. I have it on DVD. Porn today usually doesn’t feel real. I remember when I was younger watching skinamax..and loving the way they would draw out stuff..it was hot. I don’t know. Maybe I like to be teased.

LG: There was something to the old softcore stuff, I always personally thought that 80’s punk erotica was really cool it has this edgy quality to it that you rarely see done in a cool non-sceavy way

EVS: I’ve never seen any, but now I’m curious. (I give her a link to Submit to Me Staring Lyan I just wish more porn were made to appeal to women. Even today a lot of girls are so hush hush about masturbating, that they can’t and don’t know how they like to be touched or fucked. I learned a lot by watching other women touch themselves and how the guys touched them. Nobody is just born awesome at sex. It’s a long learning process

LG: Is porn art?

EVS: No way, Sex can be art and beautiful but not porn. I can’t define porn with words I just know it when I see it. That’s like asking are the Hanes models in the sears catalogue art… no. They are just people standing around in underwear. Does that make sense?

LG: What kind of music do you get into is it the standard punk and metal staples that most alt girls use? Or do you have any weird songs on the iPod that some won’t expect?

EVS: I’m all over the place. NIN pretty hate machine will be my favorite album forever. I also rock out to Crystal Method; I love to go on stage to the Vegas album. Trip like I do, and High Roller. I really like Atmosphere’s When life gives you lemons, paint that shit gold, Massive attack is great on molly, I love prince. The Cars, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Skinny Puppy. and I am ashamed to say it but I like HIM okay. There I said it.

LG: You can go into any decade, you remain a pornstar, but in a scene of your choosing which decade would you choose?

EVS: I’d go back and be deep throat because I have no gag reflex. (I tell her how fabricated that answer sounds) But it’s an honest answer. I wish I had done the film and I can prove my no gag reflex, I wanted to have an eating disorder total fail btw.

LG :Are you interested in art of any forms? Any particular artists you enjoy?

EVS: As far as art goes Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia. Miss Van, Fafi, Lithium Picnic and Kevyn Aucoin

LG: Why are all pornstars bisexual according to bios?

EVS: All porn girls are bi because nobody wants to put gay for pay. Pussy is an acquired taste but I love sex with women, I’ve just never been in love with one

What you don’t see in this interview is about three hours of riffing on pop culture and life in general. Eden was one of the funnest interviews I’ve ever had the pleasure of doing and I’m very happy to welcome her to the Local Ghosts team. Yeah that’s right. New Columnist Eden Von Sleaze. Get pumped
